What is a Logarithm?
The logarithm is the inverse function to exponentiation. That means the logarithm of a given number x is the exponent to which another fixed number, the base b, must be raised, to produce that number x.
Logarithm Formula
If by = x, then logb(x) = y
Important Base Rules
- Base 10: Commonly used in science and engineering. Often written simply as
log(x)without the base. - Base e (2.718...): The natural logarithm. Essential in higher mathematics, physics, and continuous compounding. Often written as
ln(x). - Base 2: Highly utilized in computer science and information theory.
Note: The base `b` must be positive and not equal to 1. The number `x` must be strictly positive (x > 0).
